ACTING CLASSES

The SPA Theatre Department boasts open enrollment for all classes, with the exception of auditioned groups (Show Choir/Main Stage Musicals). You may register for these classes at any time. If you are registered for one session, you are not automatically registered for the following session.


BEGINNING ACTING

It’s show time! This workshop helps students gain confidence and grow as young artists. They will receive the skills necessary to follow stage directions, articulate clearly, listen, react in the moment, create a character and ensemble, and more. We will rehearse and perform an old classic story with a modern twist at the end of the session. Let’s raise the curtain! Final performances will take place on the Saturday afternoon of your final session.

Age: Grades 2-4

AUDITION WORKSHOP:

Acting the Song and Audition Prep in Music Theatre

This class will focus on building a musical theatre audition package: putting together a resume, how to “work” the audition, short monologue preparation, cold-readings, working with an accompanist, and acting a song. Participants should have some music theatre experience prior to taking this class. An observation and Q&A session will take place at the end of the session.

Age: Grades 5 – 10
Date: Tuesday, January 10 – February 14, winter session only
Time: 6:45 – 8:00 p.m. with Ms. Tiffany

STAND-UP COMEDY FOR KIDS!

Jump into the world of sketch Comedy and stand-up! This class is carefully designed for our Improv students to bring even more opportunity to work with writing and character/storytelling development.

Age: Grades 3 – 5
Dates:  January 31 – June 3
Time: Tuesdays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. with Mr. Jonathan

Students dive into the art of acting using creative drama, fundamental staging techniques, and Improv Games to perform Improvisational works, truly working and learning ‘in the moment’. The styles learned in this impulse generated class is at the core of basic acting. This growing process will always make this class appropriate for repeat students and is an excellent confidence builder. This is an excellent class for learning life-long skills!

Age: Grades 2 – 5
Dates: January 30 – June 3
Time: Monday 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Tuition: $270/session

IMPROV GENERATED SKETCH COMEDY

Using the best of styles from Chicago’s improv scene, actors will work as an ensemble to take the scene from true ‘improv’ into the concept and completion of a sketch. Writing and Improv skills will be honed in this workshop.

Time: Wednesday, 6 – 7 p.m.

TV/FILM TECHNIQUES – ACTING FOR THE CAMERA

Screen acting classes are designed for students with an interest in film and commercial work, which is quite different from the stage. Working both on and off camera, students learn the skills of on-camera acting technique. Learn about the TV/film industry by focusing on how to read copy, find camera angles, hit the mark, slate, audition, and book those gigs!

BEGINNING ACTING FOR THE CAMERA

 

Become comfortable on camera by working on character development, hitting your mark, camera angles, reading copy, and more. There is a final observation day with each session, including a Q & A with the instructor.

Age: 9-16 years
Date: January 31 – June 3
Time: Monday, 6:30-7:30 p.m. OR Tuesday, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Tuition: $280 / session

INTERMEDIATE ACTING FOR THE CAMERA

This class further develops actors with previous training on-camera. Students will focus on detailed script breakdown, more difficult character development, multiple partner scene work and monologues. There is a final observation day at the end of each session, including a Q&A with the instructor. Students will also receive a link to footage from class for educational purposes.

In order to take Intermediate TV/Film Techniques, you must complete at least three sessions at the beginning level.
Age: 12-21 years
Date: January 30 – June 3
Time: Monday, 7:30-8:45 p.m.
Tuition: $368 / session

ADVANCED ACTING FOR THE CAMERA

Building on the intermediate class philosophy, Advanced Acting for the Camera focuses on multiple partner scene work, monologues, introduction into scene writing, improv on camera, and behind the camera work. There is a final observation day with each session, including a Q & A with the instructor. Students will also receive a link to footage from class for educational purposes.

Advanced TV/Film Techniques is by invitation only and the class is limited to eight students. Please contact our theatre department with any questions.
