Opera for the Young

Grades 2 – 5

Experience this amazing new camp introducing budding singers and actors to the world of opera. Be one of the first students in the area to perform your favorite story, STONE SOUP, opera style! We will work on voice and stage skills while learning about this exciting music form. Final performance is at the conclusion of the camp.

Commissioned by the Education Department of Lyric Opera of Chicago, this charming production of STONE SOUP was written by local composer Philip Seward and will be directed by Lyric Opera’s Michelle Konow!

There is a small costume requirement for this class.


Rock & Blues Band Camp

Ages 12-18
Acoustic & electric guitar, percussion, bass, keyboard, and voice

Using music from the Beatles to Stevie Ray Vaughan, this camp will show students what it's like to play in a Rock Band! Learn how to improvise, how to put together your own band, how to read chord charts, and more. A final gig will be booked where students let loose and jam out together! Students will be grouped according to age and playing level based on their audition.

We will take a trip to the beach, river, and bathtub! Children will explore the sounds, sensations, movements, and music of all things wet and bubbly while they explore the learning focus: 'I am learning to understand the world through opposites.  I can think in 3's.'   Home Kit includes The Family Activity Guide, take-home CD with this month's Instrument/prop: beach ball.

Let’s Play
July 11 to August 1
Ages 2-3 with caregiver
Fridays, 10:00 am to 10:45 am, Naperville Campus

It’s all about playtime!  Children will visit an imaginary playground, pretend they are springy jack-in-the-boxes, play instruments, and engage in a story about toys and imagination as they explore the learning focus: “I love to sing! I learn when I play.”  Home Kit includes The Family Activity Guide and take-home CD with this month's instrument -  tambourine.

Out and About
August 8 to August 29
Ages 2-3 with caregiver
Fridays, 10:00 am to 10:45 am, Naperville Campus

We will take an imaginary trip into the world of adventure. Imagination and gross-motor practice get a front seat as children ride bicycles, hike in the mountains, and even hop the surf on a trip to the beach.  Children will exercise focused listening skills and inhibitory control as they explore the learning focus: “I know how to take turns. I like to use my imagination.”  Home Kit includes The Family Activity Guide and take-home CD, with this month's instrument - shaker bells.

Jazz Kitchen 
June 6 to June 27
Ages 4-6 without caregiver
Fridays, 11:00 am to 11:45 am

We will take jazz music, sounds, and instruments into the kitchen!  Children will explore food in its many dimensions—shopping at the grocery store, then heating up the kitchen with chopping, dicing, making toast, and cooking noodles from scratch—all to the rhythms and sounds of jazz.  They’ll also explore quarter-note and eight-note rhythms with their hands, their bodies, and a piano keyboard.
Home Kit includes The Family Activity Guide and take-home CD and rhythm instrument/or prop.

Under the Rainbow
July 11 to August 1
(No class July 4)
Ages 4-6 without caregiver
Fridays, 11:00 am to 11:45 am, Naperville Campus

We will explore high and low, glockenspiels, slide whistles and more to the tune of Irish music.  Children will listen to Irish music, play instruments, dance a leprechaun jig, and explore high and low sounds in this unit’s story, Under the Rainbow.  They’ll also explore the high and low sounds with their hands, bodies and a piano keyboard. Home Kit includes The Family Activity Guide, take-home CD, and rhythm instrument/or prop.

August 8 to August 29
Ages 4-6 without caregiver

It’s all about laughter, humor and fun.  Children will hear and tell knock-knock jokes, dance silly dances, and laugh their way through all kinds of activities.  They’ll hear instruments found in traditional American folk music, including the banjo, washboard, saw, spoons, and jaw harp.  They’ll explore presto (fast) and largo (slow) in all kinds of environments—on the keyboard, with their hands and bodies and with other instruments and props.  Home Kit includes The Family Activity Guide and take-home CD, and rhythm instrument/or prop.

Piano & String students 3rd grade & older
Woodwind & Brass students 6th grade & older

Instrumental performing ensembles designed for students looking to develop ensemble, rhythmic, and performance skills. Students will develop their playing skills through performance repertoire spanning from classical to contemporary jazz and pop pieces. Students will be placed into various small ensemble combinations based on their audition.

Returning Members need not audition.
