The Suzuki Program

Suzuki Piano

_________________________________________________________________
For ages 3 and up

In the Suzuki method, the child, parent, and teacher all work together as part of a team. The parent attends the lessons, then reinforces what is taught with the child at home. The child-parent relationship is strengthened as the parent becomes the “at home” teacher. In the process, the parent is educated about their child’s learning style and also has the opportunity to help the child develop character traits such as self-discipline, problem-solving skills, and perseverance through the time they spend together creating music.

The Suzuki method allows children to develop a keen ear for music. They become able to discern pitch accurately and learn to listen intently, detecting subtle musical nuances. They come to be able to recognize musical form, identify musical periods, and so on. Suzuki students learn to play by ear. They are able to learn melodies on their own, using this skill and in some cases to put together whole pieces. It is after the ear training is established that they learn to read music.

Children are taught how to perform from an early age in the Suzuki style of learning. They perform for their peers in group class on monthly basis and become comfortable in front of an audience. Children memorize each piece they learn and continue to review those pieces and new ones over time. The end result is that they possess a repertoire of music which they are able to perform at a moment’s notice. Each piece grows in character and musicality as the child matures and develops. Self-confidence and poise grow and children develop self-esteem through their study of music.

Suzuki Violin, and NEW! Suzuki Viola and Cello!

For ages 3 and up

The Suzuki approach is based on the premise that all children learn music the same way they learn language. The idea is that if children have the ability to learn a language, they have the ability to become proficient on a musical instrument. In the beginning, learning music by ear is emphasized over reading music. This parallels language learning, where a child learns to speak before they learn to read. Children develop musical ability, gain the poise necessary for performance, and learn to read music notation as they progress.

Parent involvement plays a major role in this method. Both parents and children attend the lessons, and parents are expected to supervise daily practice.

Suzuki study consists of two weekly group lessons: one small study group, and one larger group class. Children receive individual attention in their small study group made up of others their age and level. They observe their classmates, gaining insights and motivation each week. The larger group, also weekly, covers more levels and works on musicianship, music theory, repertoire, and reading.

There are four required parent meetings throughout the school year, and six play-ins.
Observation of lessons is strongly encouraged before signing up.
