The Suzuki Program at The School of Performing Arts

About the Suzuki Method
The Suzuki approach is based on the premise that all children learn music the same way they learn language. The idea is that if children have the ability to learn a language, they have the ability to become proficient on a musical instrument. In the beginning, learning music by ear is emphasized over reading music. This parallels language learning, where a child learns to speak before they learn to read. Children develop musical ability, gain the poise necessary for performance, and learn to read music notation as they progress.
Parent involvement plays a major role in this method. Parent and child attend the lessons, and the parent is expected to supervise daily practice.
Children are taught how to perform from an early age in the Suzuki style of learning. They perform for their peers in group class or play-in approximately once a month to become comfortable in front of an audience. Children memorize each piece they learn and continue to review those pieces and new ones over time. The end result is that they possess a repertoire of music which they are able to perform at a moment’s notice. Each piece grows in character and musicality as the child matures and develops. Self-confidence and poise grow and children develop self-esteem through their study of music.

The School of Performing Arts offers the Suzki method in Violin, Viola, Cello and Piano. All are offered at our Naperville Campus and Piano only is offered currently at our Plainfield Campus.

Suzuki Violin, Viola and Cello (read on for piano)
3 - 6 years
Preschool classes meet once a week for one year. Students then join a small study group and a large group.  Small groups meet weekly, where students observe their classmates and receive individual instruction allowing the student to gain insights and motivation. The large group, also weekly, covers more levels and works on musicianship skills, music theory, repertoire and reading music.

Advanced students receive a 30”, 45”, or 60” private lesson in addition to the large group lesson.
*There are four required parent meetings throughout the school year and four play-ins.
*Observation of lessons is strongly encouraged before signing up.
