At The School of Performing Arts we have several ‘auditioned’ workshops and productions. Auditioning is a learned skill; our auditions at SPA are always in a friendly, warm and professional environment. We also have several classes/workshops within our Studio Series in which we help the children learn the art of auditioning.

Casting in MainStage Musicals:  In casting our MainStage Musicals, it is part of our mission to give our students as professional an experience as possible, while never losing sight of the love for the Art of Musical Theatre!

Casting in our Studio Series: We also have many exciting opportunities, which do not include an audition – this is the beauty of our Studio Series. We talk about the importance and art of auditioning, while helping find your child the perfect role to play within the show. We also have several audition workshops throughout the year.

Auditioning and Casting at SPA is never an easy task and can seem at times unfair to anyone not getting the role he or she may want the most, but what that does is give the experience – the true experience of casting. We strive to always cast the best person for each and every role, while always welcoming new faces and performers! I hope your child will come to audition for all future productions at SPA!

Please know that our job in casting is to always cast the person we feel is suited best for the role (which should be so in any casting position, casting someone who is most prepared and experienced in all angles of musical theatre, including: confidence, preparedness, performance, acting/voice/dance technique, tone color, delivery, attitude and more). Of course, casting can always be subjective, as any directing team can have varying opinions.



High School Musical, Jr.

Looking forward to seeing you at HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, Jr. AUDITIONS tomorrow night at The School of Performing Arts! Please read carefully over the following information to help make sure our evening runs smoothly! Be sure to reach out with any questions!
With a high level of interest in our Summer Jr. MainStage, we are scheduled to see around 40 actors tomorrow… auditions will most likely last until 9:30pm, rather than the previously scheduled 9:00pm. Everyone will begin and be dismissed at the same time. You may want to bring a water bottle with you to your audition.
ARRIVAL TIME & IMPORTANT DETAILS: Please arrive at least 5 – 10 minutes early to check-in for your HSM Audition. Everyone’s audition will begin promptly at 6:30pm. Check-in (beginning around 6:00pm) will take place near the business office of The School of Performing Arts. Please be sure to bring your Audition Form (can be found online at and a headshot/snapshot to your audition. You should be warmed up, before arriving to your audition. Be sure to warm-up physically and vocally.
DANCE CALL: Begins promptly at 6:30pm. We will all DANCE the first portion of our audition in Studio D with our choreographer, Ms. Megan. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and jazz/tennis shoes. You will learn a short combination in the style of HSM, Jr. and then perform that combo for our artistic team.
SINGING/ACTING: The remaining portion of our auditions 7:00 – 9:30pm, will be spent in the Sondheim Room, in both small and large groups, with singing/acting and character work. There may be some downtime, so feel free to bring a book or some homework. Everyone will be dismissed between 9:00 – 9:30pm.

Non-Audition Supporting/Ensemble Roles:
Not quite ready to Audition? No biggee – just register for a Supporting/Ensemble Role within the show and show up at our first rehearsal the week of May 26. The Ensemble is featured in so many numbers with High School Musical, Jr., lots of singing and dancing!
To prepare for your Leading Role Audition: Please be familiar with the scene work and song (will be available in April). Be prepared to sing and read the song/scene during your audition. You do not need to prepare a separate song. All those auditioning will be there between 7:00 – 9:00pm, in addition to the dance call from 6:30 – 7:00pm. Please dress comfortable and wear jazz or tennis shoes. Arrive a few minutes early to fill out paperwork. Please be sure you are warmed up! And, ladies… if you bring a BOY with you to your audition; we’ll have a prize for you!!!

CASTING NOTICE for Small Children’s Ensemble in Les Miserables at SPA
Small Children’s Ensemble in Les Miserables this summer at The School of Performing Arts.
We are only looking to cast a handful of young ladies and young gentlemen; we may even ask your little girl to play a little boy… for a different look/picture in our story.
Please RSVP with your interest to We are not taking video submissions. We are only seeing a limited number of children during this time. Children must be able to play ages 6 – 9 years old and should be willing to play a boy or girl. We are looking for strong singers and performers, who have the ability to focus throughout rehearsal, along with a flexible schedule this summer!
*Please email if you are interested in Auditioning/Workshopping – you will receive an EMAIL CONFIRMATION if we have room for your child. We are seeing a limited amount of children. There will be a small cost to this workshop.
AUDITION/WORKSHOP DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 10th  11:30am – 1:00pm at SPA. We will meet in the Parent Waiting Room and then head into Studio D to workshop/audition.
WHAT TO PREPARE: If interested, you don’t need to prepare anything – we are looking for strong singers and performers, who have the ability to focus throughout rehearsal, along with a flexible schedule this summer! We will teach you a tune or two at the workshop/audition and ask the kids to sing/perform it back. If you’d like to familiarize the kids with Little Cosette (to play age 6) and Gavroche’s (to play age 6 – 8) tunes in Les Mis that would be fine (Castle on a Cloud/Look Down and Little People… google it up for more!)

The Dance Ensemble is a competitive performing group with both regional and national championships.
More than just a performing group the ensemble is designed for young, passionate artists who want to take their performing and dance abilities to the next level. The Ensemble fosters growth in creating the whole performer focusing on multiple genres of dance. Ensemble students have had the privilege of working with some of Chicago’s finest and highly acclaimed choreographers and has shared the stage with numerous professional dance companies at some of the most prestigious dance events in the city, including Dance Chicago.

Audition “Everything an Actor Needs to Know to get the Part” in Acting and Music Theatre: Following the GUIDEPOSTS in Michael Shurtleff’s “Audition”
For Grades 7 – 12
Prepare yourself for any audition. This class will follow the book and guideposts from one of the best tools in the business – “Audition”. Participants will be required to purchase the book and will work throughout the session to incorporate the guideposts, along with touching on the tangible necessities of the audition process. Class will end with a mock audition session.

STUDIO STAGE SERIES - Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, JR.!
For ages 6 – Grade 5
This year boasts a Studio Stage for children ages 6 – Grade 5 with three performances!
This series is a favorite of The School and is designed as a performance outlet to allow students the opportunity to experience musical theatre at a comfortable pace. Students who have a love for music, theatre, dance, and performance will have a blast attending weekly rehearsals, learning about musical theatre, and perfecting their talents! A final Studio performance will be presented at the end of the session – lights, sound, costumes, props and more set this opportunity above the rest!
